The crisis rocking Nigeria’s opposition People’s Democratic Party (PDP) has deepened with four national vice chairmen of the party calling on the embattled National Chairman, Uche Secondus to resign from office.
Some political elders in the PDP had on August 5 intervened and saved Secondus from a planned removal by certain forces opposed to his leadership.
The indication that the elders’ had achieved a breakthrough in their intervention emerged, when Deputy National Publicity Secretary of the party, Diran Odeyemi, who was among the seven that resigned their positions on Tuesday, August 3, changed his stand and withdrew his resignation letter.
But in a resolution issued Sunday night after a meeting in Abuja, the Nigerian capital, the four national vice chairmen said that “having reviewed the state of the party, they decided to pass the resolution asking the National Chairman of PDP Prince Uche Secondus to resign to save the party from total disintegration”.
The resolution exclusively obtained by THISDAY and ARISE News read: “The meeting reviewed the recent resignation by elected national officers of the party blaming their decision on the inept leadership of the national chairman and the recent movement of our governors and members of the National Assembly to a failed ruling party.
“The meeting also calls on all stakeholders to remain steadfast and calm as our party remains the hope of Nigerians.”
The resolution was signed by
Taofeek Arapaja, National Vice Chairman, South west, Chief Ali Odefa, National Vice Chairman, South east, Chief Dan Orbih, National Chairman South South, Dakas Shan, National Chairman North central.
