Nigeria Orders Closure of Universities Ahead of Elections

Nigeria’s National Universities Commission, on Thursday in a letter signed by the Deputy Executive Secretary (Administration ) Chris J. Maiyaki, has requested the shutdown and suspension of academic activities from Wednesday 22nd February 2023 to Tuesday 14th March 2023. 

The directive, addressed to Vice Chancellors of universities and directors, chief executive of inter  university centres, states that the request to suspend academic activities is against the backdrop of the 2023 election scheduled to hold on the 25th of February and 11th of March for presidential and governorship elections respectively.

According to the NUC “In view of the foregoing and concerns expressed on the security of staff, students and properties of the our respective institutions, the Honourable Minister of Education, Mal. Adama Adamu has, following extensive consultations with the relevant security agencies, directed that all universities and inter-university centres be shut down and academic activities be suspended between 22 February and 14th March, 2023.”

Recall that civil society organizations had called for the closure of universities to enable students vote. According to the Independent National Electoral Commission’s data, students make up about 26 million registered voters.
