Nigeria May Backtrack on June Deadline for Petrol Subsidy Removal

Nigeria’s federal government has announced that the proposed staggered removal of subsidy on petrol, which was initially scheduled to take place in less than two months, is now dependent on the incoming administration that will be inaugurated on May 29.

This announcement was made by the Minister of Finance, Budget, and National Planning, Zainab Ahmed, at the end of the valedictory meeting of the National Economic Council.

The Council has agreed to form an expanded committee to examine the removal process, including determining the appropriate timing, devising measures to support the poor and vulnerable, and implementing alternatives.

The issue of subsidy has been a controversial topic in Nigeria.

In January 2022, the Federal Government proposed 18 months extension to the National Assembly for the implementation of the Petroleum Industry Act signed by President Muhammadu Buhari.

The act does not provide room for petrol subsidy.
