Nigeria: Mannequins Banned in Northwest Kano State For Causing ‘Immoral Thoughts’

A northern Nigerian state has forbidden the use of mannequins for clothes display as they are responsible for invoking immoral thoughts among some members of the public.

Another reason that was given by the head of Kano state’s Islamic police force, Hisbah for the ban of display dummies that mimic the human form is because it violates Islamic teachings.

Harun Muhammad Sani Ibn Sina, commander of the state Hisbah board says a public sensitisation campaign against mannequins is being introduced, after which offenders will face arrest and prosecution.

”Hisbah prohibits the use of mannequins at shops, commercial and private residences, and other public places. This violates Islamic provisions, it is also responsible for immoral thoughts among some members of the public, all these are against Islam,” he said.

“We have divided Kano into five areas for the monitoring and implementation of the ban across the state.”

Kano is one of 12 Nigerian states practising the Sharia legal system alongside the country’s secular laws.

Tailors, supermarkets and boutique owners are all subject to the new rules and face raids in future to check they are complying, Sheikh Ibn Sina adds in the statement.
