Residents in Nigeria’s Ondo State went to the polls on Saturday to decide who will be their next governor and lead them for the next four years. The collation of results by election officials began early Sunday morning, with incumbent Governor and candidate of the All Progressives Congress, Rotimi Akeredolu, taking an early lead.
The Governor recorded 178,854 votes after results from 12 of the state’s 18 local governments were announced.
His closest challenger, the People’s Democratic Party’s Eyitayo Jegede, recorded 141,083 votes. Another major contender, the State’s Deputy Governor and candidate of the Zenith Labour Party, Agboola Ajayi, has recorded 32,060 votes.
Akeredolu has won nine of the local governments so far, clinching victory in Akoko South East, Idanre LGA, Owo LGA, Ondo East LGA, Akoko North West, Akoko South East, Akoko North East, Irele LGA and Ile Oluji Oke Igbo LGA.
Jegede secured victory in three local government areas- Akure South, Akure North and Ifedore LGA.
