The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) is set to introduce a contactless passport renewal system, with the first phase launching in Canada on Friday.
According to an NIS announcement on its official X account, the second phase will expand the service to the United Kingdom, United States, and Italy on November 15, while the third phase will grant Nigeria and other countries access to the system starting December 1.
Previously, applicants had to visit designated centres for biometric data capture and passport collection. However, with the new system, “Individuals will be able to apply to renew their international passports from the comfort of their homes without having to visit any NIS office,” the NIS noted.
The process, applicable only to passport renewals, allows applicants to use the NIS mobile app—available for download on Google Play, the App Store, and the Windows Store—or the NIS immigration portal. While the app is yet to go live on these platforms, Nigerians in Canada are expected to access it soon and commence renewals on the scheduled date.
