Nigeria: Gunmen Set Federal High Court in Southeast Ebonyi State Ablaze

Yet to be identified gunmen have attacked the Ebonyi State division of the Federal High Court, and reportedly used petrol bombs to set the federal institution ablaze.

The building, located in Abakaliki, the southeastern Ebonyi state capital is also opposite the opposition Peoples Democratic Party office in the state.
The fire which began in the early hours of Tuesday affected the library and the security post of the court building. However, firefighters were said to have later mobilised to the scene to put out the fire before it could cause more damage.
There were no recorded casualty during the attack which was confirmed by the police spokesperson in the state, Loveth Odah, confirmed the incident.
Ms Odah said the attackers came in their large numbers to carry out the attack.
There have been a recent surge in attacks in southeastern and south-south states with the government in the states having to deal with severe security challenges, including a spate of attacks on security agencies and correctional centres.
Analysts say a possible motive for such attacks just like the attacks on security officials, is to probably weaken state institutions that are in charge of law and order.
Over the weekend, reports emerged that gunmen had attacked the country home of the sitting governor of southeastern Imo State, setting ablaze a part of Hope Uzodinma’s house as well as his cars.
