Nigeria: EFCC Grills Former Abia Governor Theodore Orji and Son

Operatives of Nigeria’s Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on Thursday quizzed a former Abia State Governor, Theodore Orji.

This followed the reported arrest of Mr Orji – now a lawmaker representing Abia Central Senatorial District – at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in the Nigerian capital, Abuja.

The ex- governor has been on the commission’s watch list and was intercepted at about 10 am and taken to the headquarters of the EFCC at Jabi, Abuja, for continuation of his interrogation.

EFCC spokesman, Wilson Uwujaren confirmed the arrest of the former governor and noted that Orji was quizzed alongside his son, Chinedu, who is the Speaker of the Abia State House of Assembly.

Chinedu turned himself in upon learning of the arrest of his father.

According to the Senator however, he went “voluntarily” to the EFCC office to sort out “issues with my passport.”

“They were professional in handling it,” he affirmed.

Senator Orji and his sons, Chinedu and Ogbonna, are under investigation by the EFCC for alleged misappropriation of public funds and money laundering to the tune of $1.338 billion.

The ex- governor was alleged to have embezzled the N500 million monthly security vote he received for eight years as governor of Abia state between 2007 and 2015.

Other issues relate to the alleged mismanagement of N2bn Ecological Fund and conversion of Sure-P funds.
