Nigeria: DSS Releases Supporters of Yoruba Nation Agitator Sunday Igboho After 60 Days

After more than sixty days in custody, the Department of State Services (DSS), on Monday, released eight supporters of Yoruba nation separatist agitator, Sunday Adeyemo, popularly known as Sunday Igboho.

The released supporters appeared at a media briefing on Monday afternoon with Pelumi Olajengbesi, their lawyer.

The Nigerian secret police is however yet to release four of the detainees.

Those released include Abideen Shittu, Abdullateef Onaolapo, Ayobami Donald, Olakunle Oluwapelumi, Dikeola Ademola, Bamidele Sunday, Raji Kazeem, and Taiwo Tajudeen.

Those still in DSS custody are Tajudeen Irinloye, Uthman Adelabu, Amudat Babatunde, and Jamiu Oyetunji.

Speaking at the media briefing, Olajengbesi insisted that four of his clients still in custody must be freed, because they had been granted bail by the court.

They were arrested around 1am on July 1, 2021, when the operatives of DSS raided Igboho’s Ibadan residence in a Gestapo style, killing two other associates of the activist in a “gun duel.”

The 12 detainees had approached the court to seek their release.

The presiding judge of the federal high court, Abuja had granted them bail. Upon the perfection of their bail conditions, Justice Obiora Egwuatu had also signed their Release Order last week but the DSS kept the detainees, still.

The DSS also filed an appeal challenging the bail granted to the released persons.
