Nigeria’s Federal Government has expressed deep sympathy and condolences to the families, people and the Egyptian government over the unfortunate terrorist attack that killed eleven military personnel in the Sinai Peninsula, on May 7, 2022.
The Spokesperson, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Mrs. Francisca Omayuli, in a statement on Monday, said the heinous and condemnable act, further reinforces the importance of strengthening the collective efforts of the international community towards the elimination of terrorism and all forms of extremism from societies.
She said: “Nigeria stands in solidarity with Egypt in these trying times and prays for the repose of the souls of the departed, and the speedy recovery of the injured.”
An Egyptian news outlet has reported that Egypt’s military spokesperson, Colonel Gharib Abdel Hafez, announced on Saturday, 7 May that an officer and 10 soldiers from the Egyptian military died in a terrorist attack in the East Canal area, with five others injured during the attack.
The spokesman was quoted to have disclosed that: “The attack was perpetrated near a water plant that was protected by the Egyptian military.”
