Nigeria: Abia Governor Ikpeazu Says Southeast Assemblies Working to Provide Legal Backing for ‘Regional Police’

Abia State Governor Okezie Ikpeazu says the state assemblies of the five southeastern states are “doing the needful” at ensuring the required legal backing to the formation of the region’s security outfit codenamed Ebube Agu is done.

Mr Ikpeazu told ARISE News on Tuesday that he doesn’t expect the current lack of a legal framework to be an impediment to the success of the security outfit.

“The state assemblies of the five southeastern states are doing the needful, those that haven’t done are doing the needful and we don’t expect any legal framework to be an impediment,” Governor Ikpeazu said when he featured on ARISE Newsday.

“Our fight to secure our place has become existential and in that regard every other thing is second. We’ll advance whatever is necessary to ensure that we protect lives and properties in the southeast.

“Nobody will expect us to tie our hands, we’ll not allow that to happen here that will give a semblance of a scenario where people will be allowed to resort to self-help or non-state actors will take the front burner.

“This is the time for us to rise to the occasion and do the needful because we’ve been elected to protect lives and property in this region.”
