Nigeria: 6 Jersey Cows in Ekiti Producing 150 Litres of Milk Daily, Compared to 50 Litres from 40 Local Cows

Six out of the two hundred and twenty-seven (227) Jersey cows recently gotten by Nigeria’s southwestern Ekiti State government are now delivering 150 litres of milk per day, compared to 50 litres from 40 indigenous cows.

Akin Oyebode, the Ekiti State Commissioner of Finance and Economic Development stated this on Monday noting that the Ikun Dairy Farm will soon hit the 1,000 litres/day mark.

Governor of Ekiti State, Kayode Fayemi had in April said the Ikun Dairy Farm at Ikun-Ekiti, when fully in operation, will serve as a prototype for National Livestock Transformation Plan in addressing the farmers-herders crisis.

The state had at the time ordered 227 cows from the United States of America and the expansive farm for the cultivation of hays for the cows.

The integrated farm, designed to begin production of 10,000 litres of milk daily, is a joint project by Ekiti State Government and Promasidor Diary Company.

“Popped into Ikun Dairy Farm yesterday with my friends. Our cows have started calving. We now have two female calves, the second was born only yesterday,” Mr Oyebode said on his official Twitter handle.

“The best part is that 6 of our Jersey cows are now delivering 150 litres of milk per day, compared to 50 litres from 40 indigenous cows. Tells me we will soon hit the 1,000 litres/day mark,” he added.
