New York police have released two photographs of an unmasked individual wanted for questioning in connection with the fatal shooting of Brian Thompson, the 50-year-old chief executive of UnitedHealthcare.
Thompson was gunned down on Wednesday morning outside the Hilton hotel in Midtown Manhattan. Police say the attack appears to have been premeditated, with the assailant fleeing the scene without stealing any of Thompson’s belongings.
The incident occurred at approximately 06:45 EST (11:45 GMT) in a bustling area near Times Square and Central Park. Thompson was scheduled to speak at an investor conference later that day.
According to investigators, the suspect, wearing a black face mask and a light brown or cream-coloured jacket, waited for about five minutes outside the Hilton hotel before the attack. When Thompson arrived on foot, he was shot in the back and leg. He succumbed to his injuries roughly 30 minutes later at a nearby hospital.
Authorities are using facial recognition technology and analysing bullet casings found at the scene, which contained cryptic messages, to trace the suspect. Despite the clues, police have not yet identified a motive for the killing.
Efforts to locate the individual continue as police urge anyone with information to come forward.
