Netflix has halted plans for a second season of its debut African Original series, ‘Queen Sono’, despite its initial renewal.
The decision to cancel production of the series’ second season followed difficulties encountered due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
“We’ve made the difficult decision not to move forward with season 2 of ’Queen Sono’, Netflix said in a statement.
“A huge thank you to our fans across the world for the love shared for our first African Original series.
“Netflix is also grateful to the amazing efforts shown by the cast and crew for their stellar efforts in creating this show for our members around the world.”
Reacting to the development, ‘Queen Sono’ director and screenwriter Kagiso Lediga said: “We wrote a beautiful story that spanned the continent but unfortunately could not be executed in these current trying times.”
The South African crime series starring Pearl Thusi made headlines when the first season was released earlier this year because it was the first full Netflix Original series from the continent. Created by Kagiso Lediga, the show followed a secret agent who deals with criminal operations and received a renewal exactly two months after its premiere.
Its cancellation follows a string of titles that were either looking to come back for another season or were initially renewed but reversed. Notable titles that fall into the latter category include ‘The Society’ season 2 and perhaps most notably, ‘GLOW’ season 4.
