Prince Nduka Obaigbena, Chairman of the THISDAY/Arise Media Group, is set to deliver a crucial lecture on media survival strategies amidst the economic challenges facing the Nigerian media landscape.
The lecture will be the highlight of the second Alhaji Lateef Jakande Annual Memorial Lecture, scheduled for Tuesday, 10am, at the Radisson Blu Hotel, Isaac John Street, Ikeja, Lagos.
Themed “Rapidly Changing Media Landscape: Survival Strategies,” the event aims to provide a platform for editors, media executives, and other stakeholders to explore and discuss strategies to navigate the rapidly evolving media environment. The lecture, which commemorates the legacy of the late Alhaji Lateef Jakande, a pioneering figure in Nigerian journalism and politics, is organised by the Nigerian Guild of Editors (NGE).
In a statement issued by NGE President Mr. Eze Anaba and General Secretary Dr. Iyobosa Uwugiaren, the Guild emphasised the lecture’s significance, stating, “The annual lecture… is both a testament to the cherished service rendered by Alhaji Jakande and an acknowledgment of the significance of having such a conversation for the overall good of the media and the country, Nigeria.”
The event will be chaired by the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Alhaji Mohammed Idris, with Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu serving as the Special Guest of Honour. Notable figures such as the Publisher of Vanguard Media Group, Uncle Sam Amuka; former Governor of Ogun State, Chief Segun Osoba; and former Minister of Information and Culture, Gen. Ike Nwachukwu (retired), will also be present as Fathers of the Day.
The Nigerian Guild of Editors, which was established on May 20, 1961, plays a vital role in the Nigerian media industry. “Originally named the Guild of Newspaper Editors of Nigeria, it was later renamed Nigerian Guild of Editors to accommodate colleagues in the broadcast/online media,” the NGE noted. The Guild highlighted Jakande’s role in its formation, saying, “Alhaji Lateef Jakande’s name remains treasured – whenever committed service is mentioned in the media and public service.”
The lecture will serve as a critical forum for discussing the challenges faced by the Nigerian media, including economic pressures, and the strategies necessary for survival and growth.
