National Mourning Declared After Montenegro Gunman Kills 10, Including Two Children

A gunman fatally shot at least 10 individuals, including two children, in southern Montenegro on Wednesday, according to police reports.

The incident occurred partially within a restaurant in the Cetinje region following a verbal altercation among patrons, as stated by a police official to the public broadcaster RTCG.

Authorities later confirmed that the perpetrator took his own life. The government has declared a three-day period of national mourning commencing Thursday, with Prime Minister Milojko Spajic describing the incident as a “terrible tragedy.”

Interior Minister Danilo Saranovic revealed that the gunman had killed members of his own family, the restaurant owner, and two of the owner’s children. Saranovic attributed the event to disturbed interpersonal relations, as reported by AFP news agency.

Four individuals remain in critical condition in hospital after sustaining severe injuries in the shooting, according to the prime minister, as cited by the agency. The attacker, identified as Aleksandar Martinović, fled the scene but later inflicted a fatal injury on himself after being encircled by police who demanded he disarm, a police official reported. Mass shootings are relatively uncommon in the small Balkan nation.
