Moroccan police seized a massive 18.243 tonnes of cannabis resin in the coastal town of Sidi Rehal, located south of Casablanca, on Monday. The operation resulted in the arrest of five individuals who were caught unloading the illicit substance from a truck into rapid inflatable boats, according to a statement from the police.
The authorities have launched an investigation to uncover the connections of the arrested individuals with local and international drug trafficking networks. This seizure is part of Morocco’s intensified efforts in recent months to combat drug trafficking.
In March, Moroccan authorities seized 10.7 tonnes of cannabis in the Atlantic coastal city of Agadir. Additionally, last June, a significant haul of 19.5 tonnes of cannabis resin was intercepted, concealed in a truck loaded with octopus destined for Spain.
Morocco is known as a major producer of cannabis. While the country has permitted the cultivation, export, and use of cannabis for medicinal and industrial purposes since 2021, recreational use of the drug remains illegal. The recent seizures highlight Morocco’s ongoing commitment to tackling illegal drug trafficking within its borders and beyond.
