More Than Million Displaced from Rafah Amid Gaza War

Over a million people have been forced to leave the Gaza city of Rafah, according to the United Nations Palestinian refugee agency (UNRWA) announcement on Monday.

Rafah, located at the southern border of the Gaza Strip, was home to about one million Palestinians who fled Israeli attacks in other parts of the area, as reported by aid organizations.

Since early May, the Israeli military has been conducting what it claims is a limited operation in Rafah to eliminate Hamas fighters and dismantle infrastructure used by the Palestinian Islamist militant group governing Gaza.

Civilians have been instructed by the Israeli military to relocate to an “expanded humanitarian zone” approximately 20 km (12 miles) away.

Despite this, many Palestinians feel unsafe from Israeli attacks regardless of where they go, leading them to move around the Gaza Strip in recent months.

UNRWA stated that thousands of families are now seeking shelter in damaged and destroyed facilities in the city of Khan Younis, where the agency is providing vital services despite facing increasing difficulties.

The agency remarked, “Conditions are indescribable.”
