Monday Okpebholo has been sworn in as the new governor of Edo State during an inauguration ceremony held in Benin, the state capital on Tuesday.
Representing the All Progressives Congress (APC), Okpebholo won the off-cycle governorship election held on 21 September, securing 291,667 votes to defeat the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) candidate, Asue Ighodalo, who garnered 247,274 votes.
Labour Party (LP) candidate Olumide Akpata finished third, receiving 22,763 votes.
Dennis Idahosa was also sworn in as the deputy governor of Edo State.
The event was attended by Vice-President Kashim Shettima, Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq, chair of the governors’ forum, Philip Shaibu, the reinstated deputy governor of Edo, and other APC governors.
Following the oath-taking, the new governor rode around the stadium in an open-top van, acknowledging cheers from supporters.
