The Nigerian military has dismissed allegations that airstrikes conducted by its fighter jets in the Silame Local Government Area (LGA) of Sokoto State targeted civilians.
The airstrikes, carried out under Operation Hadarin Daji (OPHD), reportedly aimed at the Lakurawa terrorist group, but media reports on Wednesday alleged that over 10 villagers in Gidan Sama and Rumtuwa communities were killed, with several others injured.
In a statement, Abubakar Abdullahi, joint media coordinator for the operation, emphasised that the airstrikes were based on “thorough intelligence and reconnaissance missions” to ensure precision and protect civilian lives.
“These reports have raised concerns; however, it is crucial to clarify that all military operations are conducted based on thorough intelligence and reconnaissance missions,” the statement said.
Abdullahi cautioned against unverified claims, asserting that terrorist groups might resort to disinformation to undermine military efforts.
“Importantly, the targets struck in the vicinity of Gidan Sama and Rumtuwa have been positively identified as associated with the Lakurawa group, reinforcing the justification for the military action taken,” he added.
Similarly, Olusola Akinboyewa, spokesperson for the Nigerian Air Force, confirmed that the airstrikes were carried out following credible intelligence and aerial surveillance. He assured that reports of potential civilian casualties would be thoroughly investigated.
“Reports of possible harm to civilians will be thoroughly investigated, and we will update you appropriately,” Akinboyewa said.
