Michelle Obama, the former First Lady of the United States, has confirmed that she will not attend the inauguration of President-elect Donald Trump on January 20.
This marks the second consecutive event she has opted to skip in recent weeks, following her absence from the state funeral for former President Jimmy Carter in Washington. In contrast, former Presidents Barack Obama, Bill Clinton, and George W. Bush will be present at the ceremony.
A statement from the Office of Barack and Michelle Obama confirmed that the former First Lady will not be present at the upcoming inauguration, though no specific reason has been provided for her decision, according to reports. It was also noted that former President Barack Obama will be attending the event.
The absence of Michelle Obama was notably evident at the memorial service for Jimmy Carter, held at the Washington National Cathedral, where her husband, along with former Presidents Trump, Obama, Bush, and Clinton, participated in the proceedings. Her absence was highlighted as she was the only spouse not in attendance, while the others, including Hillary Clinton, were present.
The inauguration marks a significant occasion, with former presidents attending each ceremony. In 2017, all three living ex-presidents, including Hillary Clinton, were present at Trump’s first inauguration following her loss in the 2016 election.
