Michael Olise has officially signed with Bayern Munich from Crystal Palace, the clubs announced on Sunday. Olise, who inked a five-year deal with the German giants, scored 10 goals in just 19 Premier League appearances last season despite struggling with injuries.
“Michael Olise is a player who can make the difference and attracted great interest with his style of play,” stated Max Eberl, Bayern’s board member for sport.
“We want new impetus in our team, new energy, new ideas – that’s what players like Michael Olise stand for. During the talks, he quickly signaled that he really wanted to join FC Bayern. We’re very much looking forward to him. He will enrich our game.”
The 22-year-old winger reportedly drew strong interest from Manchester United, Chelsea, and Newcastle but ultimately opted for a move to the Bundesliga, where he will join forces with Bayern’s star striker, Harry Kane.
Olise expressed his excitement about the move in a post on Bayern’s X platform, saying, “This is a great challenge and exactly what I was looking for.”
Crystal Palace chairman Steve Parish praised Olise’s development at the club and respected his decision to test himself at the highest level. “We are hugely proud of what Michael has achieved at Crystal Palace, a club where he has developed greatly as a player. We respect his desire to further test himself at the highest level of world football, and I would like to personally wish him the very best for his next adventure with Bayern Munich in Germany which I’m sure we will all follow closely.”
Sources told ESPN that Chelsea’s pursuit of Olise was hindered by the deal’s potential cost, with Bayern set to pay around £60 million ($76.8 million) after activating the release clause in his contract.
Despite his hamstring injury last season, Olise managed to make a significant impact in his 19 appearances for Crystal Palace. He is also set to travel to Paris in July, having been selected for the France squad participating in the Olympic football tournament.
