Meet Nigeria’s New Police Chief Alkali Baba

Nigeria’s President Muhammadu Buhari has ordered that the replacement of Mohammed Adamu with Usman Alkali Baba, as the acting Inspector General of Police (IGP) be carried out with immediate effect.

Mohammed Dangyadi, the country’s minister of police affairs, made the announcement on Tuesday while briefing state house correspondents.

Mr Baba will take over from Adamu whom Buhari had extended his tenure for three months on February 4.

Adamu, however, spent only two months out of the three month extension.

Baba holds a Masters in Public Administration (MPA) from the University of Maiduguri, Borno State and a Bachelor of Arts Degree (ED) Political Science from Bayero University, Kano State as well as Professional Courses/Workshop Institution.

The senior police officer is a member of the International Association of Chiefs of Police and was a member of Course 22/2014 of the National Defence College (NDC).

Before his appointment, Baba served as the head of the Force Criminal Intelligence and Investigation Department (FCIID) and has also served in various capacities such as DIG Force CID and was also the Force Secretary at the Force Headquarters, Abuja.

Baba was in FCT as the Deputy Commissioner, Investigation, and was also in the staff college as a directing staff.

He was in Ilorin as an Area Commander and was the second-in-command in Ebonyi state.

He was also an Assistant Commissioner, CID in Kaduna and before then was DPO (Divisional Police Officer) in various locations in Yola, Gombe, Kaduna, and Jos.

Mr Baba hails from Geidam in Yobe state and joined the police in 1988.

He was born on March 1, 1963 and married with children.

Meanwhile, Mr Dingyadi has revealed why the tenure extension of Mohammed Adamu, the former Inspector-General of Police (IGP) was cut short.

The minister of police affairs, Dingyadi told journalists that the power to make such decision resides only with the president.
