Erik ten Hag has been dismissed by Manchester United following the club’s worst start to a Premier League season, just four months after being awarded a contract extension.
United have struggled, securing only three wins from their first nine league matches, including a recent 2-1 defeat at West Ham, which contributed to growing dissatisfaction among the club’s new ownership.
The decision to part ways with Ten Hag was confirmed on Monday. Former United striker Ruud van Nistelrooy, who served as Ten Hag’s assistant, will take over as interim manager with immediate effect.
“We are grateful to Erik for everything he has done during his time with us and wish him well for the future,” the club said in a statement. “Ruud van Nistelrooy will take charge of the team as interim head coach, supported by the current coaching team, whilst a permanent head coach is recruited.”
Ten Hag faced significant pressure last season as United finished a disappointing 8th in the Premier League. However, he managed to end the campaign on a high note by leading United to victory over Manchester City in the FA Cup final at Wembley.
Despite speculation over his future, he was granted a one-year contract extension in the summer and received backing in the transfer market.
However, the poor start to this season, including losses to Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur, left United 14th in the table.
Despite earlier successes, including winning the Carabao Cup and securing third place in the Premier League during his first season, Ten Hag’s time at the club has now come to an end after two-and-a-half years in charge.
