Mali and Burkina Faso’s ruling juntas have sent delegations to Niamey on Monday, to show unity with the leaders of the coup in Niger amid regional threats to intervene against them.
Both Mali and Burkina Faso had previously warned that any foreign intervention in Niger would be considered as a “declaration of war” against them.
This act of solidarity comes in the midst of growing pressure from ECOWAS, which gave the coup’s leaders until midnight to restore President Mohamed Bazoum, warning that failure to do so might lead to possible military action from the regional group.
The presidential guard’s detention of President Bazoum on July 26 prompted the declaration of interim leadership by Gen. Abdourahmane Tchiani, who also became the acting head of the National Council for the Safeguard of the Homeland, and a sharp turn in the political situation in Niger.
