The Association of Local Governments of Nigeria code name ALGON has expressed gratitude to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his administration’s efforts towards empowering the local government system. The ALGON also commended the Judiciary for its role in entrenching a viable local government system, aligning with the popular will of the masses.
These were parts of its resolutions at the end of its 51st National Executive Council Meeting held in Katsina where it discussed key resolutions that underscores the association’s commitment to strengthening local governance in Nigeria.
The National Executive Council also appreciated the efforts of state Governors and the Nigeria Governors Forum (NGF) in conducting elections across local government areas, with over 30 states now having democratically elected chairmen.
Praying that the remaining states are hereby urged to follow suit so as to fully have a system that is people oriented according to the vision of Mr President.
In a Communique signed by the Publicity Secretary of the Association, Hon. Hamisu Anani Muhammad stated that:
“the NEC also appreciates the Governors for the uninterrupted access given to the Chairmen to run their local councils in the various states which has gone far in ensuring the democratic dividends needed gets to the people”.
The local government Chairmen reaffirmed thier dedication to good governance by pledging to deepen their symbiotic relationship with stakeholders towards promoting transparency, accountability, innovative service, and uniformity in service delivery at the grassroots level.
These they said could be achieved through effective communication and community engagement which is a bedrock for open governance.
The Association of Local Governments of Nigeria also congratulated the newly elected Governor Monday Okpebholo of Edo State and Lucky Aiyedatiwa of Ondo State on their recent elections and thanked the Executive Governor of Katsina State, Mallam Dikko Umar Radda for hosting the 51st NEC Zonal meeting.
The NEC promised to continue strengthening its engagement with multisectoral organizations, showcasing the rich economic potentials of local governments and promoting peacebuilding to attract investments and encourage income generation with service delivery.
