US rapper Lil Wayne has released his surprise DJ Khaled-hosted mixtape ‘No Ceilings 3’, the third installment in his ongoing mixtape series.
The 20-track mixtape includes guest appearances from Young Thug, Gudda Guddda, Cory Gunz and more, and has the musical reunion of Wayne and Drake on the song “B.B. King Freestyle.”
The first No Ceilings mixtape came out in 2009 and is considered one of the best mixtapes of the last two decades. It was finally released on streaming services earlier this year. Wayne followed up with the second edition in November 2015. He first teased fans with the release back in August when he said the tape would be coming next in his catalog, followed by the album, Tha Carter VI.
“[Tha] Carter VI is coming soon, but I got No Ceilings coming first. No Ceilings 3,” Wayne revealed during an interview with ESPN.
In another interview with Complex magazine, the rapper explained why now was the right time to bring back the franchise and complete the trilogy.
“The mixtape game seemed to be a dying art and since I’m one of the pioneers of the craft, and it played such a big part in my career, I felt it was only right to resurrect it,” Wayne said. “Also, it’s a lot of songs out here I wanted to kill my way!”
DJ Khaled “hosts” the mixtape, noting in an Instagram video prior to the release that he first worked with Lil Wayne on the 2005 mixtape The Suffix.
The mixtape comes as a much-needed distraction for Lil Wayne who has been the subject of intense criticism for his association with US President Donald Trump. He was also recently hit with federal firearms charges.
