Liberia has changed its stance on a humanitarian ceasefire in Gaza after President George Weah issued a directive to reverse its initial vote. The Liberian Foreign Ministry, acting on the president’s guidance, adjusted the negative vote through appropriate channels at the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA). The new vote now supports a ceasefire in Gaza, as confirmed by the country’s information ministry.
Emphasizing that diplomats who opposed the ceasefire lacked President Weah’s approval, the ministry highlighted the president’s consistent commitment to peace. President Weah had recently appealed for restraint and consideration for civilians affected by the crisis in a letter addressed to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Liberia stood out as the only African nation among the 10 countries that initially voted against the humanitarian ceasefire in Gaza during the December 12 vote.Kiki Garba
