Ecuador’s Minister of Public Works, Roberto Luque, noted that operations at three hydroelectric plants were also disrupted by the storm. “My solidarity with all the families that have been affected,” Luque expressed on the social media platform X.
The heavy rainstorm, caused by low pressure, swept across parts of Central and South America on Sunday, heightening risks of landslides, rock falls, and flooding in various regions. In El Salvador, the civil protection agency declared a red alert for heavy rains, while neighboring Guatemala saw flight diversions due to the severe weathere, according to its communications ministry.
