Lagos Safety Commission Warns Nightclubs Against Overcrowding, Vows Strict Enforcement

The Lagos State Safety Commission has raised concerns over overcrowding in nightclubs and lounges, warning that establishments found violating safety regulations will face immediate closure and legal actions.

Speaking on the matter, as seen in a press release, the Director General/CEO of the Safety Commission, Mr Lanre Mojola, emphasised the importance of adhering to occupancy limits approved by the Commission to prevent significant safety risks.

Mojola stated that while nightlife and the economic benefits it brings was supported, the importance of adhering to authorised occupancy limits needed to be emphasised.

He then highlighted the potential dangers of overcrowding, including fire hazards, compromised emergency exits, public smoking, and an increased likelihood of accidents, all of which endanger the lives of patrons, staff, and the general public.

Mojola disclosed that the Commission has commenced rigorous inspections to ensure compliance, adding that violators will face immediate repercussions.

He then said that any establishment found in violation of the safety regulations will be closed immediately, with further legal actions as deemed necessary.

The Commission urged owners and operators of hospitality venues to strictly adhere to safety measures, stressing that the regulations are designed to safeguard lives and ensure a thriving nightlife.

Appreciating the cooperation of stakeholders, Mojola called for a collective effort to uphold safety standards. “Let us work together to keep Lagos safe and thriving,” he stated.

For further guidance or to report concerns, the public is encouraged to contact the Commission via 07000SAFETY.
