Lagos Red Line Rail Begins Operations, Marking Major Milestone in State’s Public Transportation Modernisation

The Lagos Red Line Rail has officially commenced its invitational passenger operations, marking a significant milestone in the state’s ambitious plans to modernise public transportation.

Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu announced the development on Sunday via his X (formerly Twitter) account, describing it as a crucial step towards creating a more efficient and interconnected city.

“This achievement represents a major advancement in reshaping public transportation in Lagos, bringing us closer to a modern, efficient, and interconnected city.” Governor Sanwo-Olu stated.

The Red Line will initially operate four daily trips between Oyingbo and Agbado, a critical route designed to ease commuting challenges for thousands of residents. This route is expected to significantly reduce traffic congestion and enhance the quality of life for Lagosians.

Morning departures from Oyingbo are scheduled to begin at 8:30 AM, with the train making stops at key stations including Yaba, Mushin, Oshodi, Ikeja, and Agege, before arriving at Agbado at 9:37 AM.

The governor emphasised that the trains will strictly adhere to their schedules, ensuring order and efficiency in the rail services.

“This initial passenger operation allows us to continually assess the system’s safety, reliability, and efficiency, while gathering valuable feedback from passengers. This is a crucial step towards full commercial operations.”

Once fully operational, the Red Line is expected to run 20 trips daily, with the capacity to transport over 500,000 passengers each day. Beyond transportation, the Red Line is envisioned as a vital link that will connect communities and drive economic growth throughout Lagos.

To be part of this transformative experience, interested passengers are encouraged to register through the provided link.

“Together, we are creating a Lagos that serves everyone—efficient, connected, and poised for the future,” the governor concluded.

The Red Line project is a cornerstone of Lagos State’s broader strategy to develop a comprehensive and sustainable public transportation network, aimed at addressing the city’s growing population and traffic demands.
