Lagos Governor Sanwo-Olu Refutes Reports of Lawsuit to Block EFCC Actions After His Tenure

Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has refuted media reports claiming he filed a lawsuit against the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to prevent potential arrest and prosecution after his tenure in office.

The governor’s stance was clarified in a statement issued on Tuesday by the Lagos State Attorney General and Commissioner of Justice, Lawal Pedro.

The statement describing the claims as “misleading information,” read “Our attention has been drawn to the news circulating in a section of the media, titled ‘Sanwo-Olu Sues EFCC Over Alleged Plan to Arrest, Prosecute Him After Tenure.’ Mr. Sanwo-Olu did not sue the EFCC in any court, as he has no reason to do so.”

According to the Attorney General, the governor, who still has nearly three years remaining in his second term, has not been contacted by the EFCC nor implicated in any investigations.

Sanwo-Olu’s office emphasised that he has enjoyed immunity from prosecution throughout his term, and no indications suggest he would face any charges upon its conclusion.

The Attorney General also underscored the governor’s ongoing commitment to responsible governance.

The statement follows speculation stemming from an earlier report that claimed Sanwo-Olu had filed a preventive lawsuit against the EFCC. According to initial accounts, the supposed suit—filed through lawyer Darlington Ozurumba—was reportedly lodged in June before Justice Joyce Abdulmalik at the Federal High Court in Abuja. The case allegedly aimed to preempt EFCC actions regarding misconduct allegations that might surface after the governor leaves office.
