The Lagos state chapter of the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) has announced plans to immortalise Dr. Diaso Vwaere, the medical doctor who tragically died in an elevator accident on August 1, 2023. Dr. Vwaere lost her life when an elevator she was in fell from the 10th floor of the Lagos General Hospital.
In a statement released on Thursday, the NMA affirmed its commitment to ensuring that Dr. Vwaere’s memory lives on. The association has called on the Lagos state government to name the house officers’ quarters building at the General Hospital Odan after the late doctor.
“Today marks one year of remembrance of a departed heroine, and the leadership of the Nigerian Medical Association hereby reassures the family of Dr. Diaso Vwaere, the medical community, and the Nigerian citizens of our commitment to immortalize Dr. Diaso Vwaere and ensure she forever lives in our memories and be part of our history as a heroine,” the statement read.
The NMA Lagos State has specifically urged the Lagos State Government to rename the House Officers Quarters Building at General Hospital Odan to “Dr. Vwaere Diaso House Officers Quarters, GH, Lagos,” in her honor.
This gesture is part of the NMA’s effort to honor Dr. Vwaere’s contributions to the medical field and to acknowledge the tragic circumstances of her untimely death. The association believes that renaming the building will serve as a lasting tribute to her legacy.
