Lagos Blue Rail Line To Start Operations September 4

Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has confirmed the commencement of the Lagos State Blue Line Rail from the 4th of September, 2023.

Governor Sanwo-Olu who confirmed that the Blue Line Rail would be from Marina to Mile 2 said  will be taking the inaugural ride on the train on Monday, September 4, at 9 a.m., before other passengers begin to ride.

The governor put up a statement on X (previously Twitter), saying, “I am delighted to announce that the long-awaited Blue Line Rail will begin commercial operations on Monday September 4, 2023 from Marina to Mile 2 as we put #LagosOnTrack.

“Join me at 9am at Marina Station as we become the first passengers of this important project that will make daily commute easier for a lot of our residents.

“From Tuesday, partial passenger operations will begin from 6:30-10am and afternoon peak from 4-9:30pm.

“We’re starting with 12 trips for 2 weeks, ramping up to 76 trips/day and you would be able to board the train using your Lagos Cowry Card,” he said.

Sanwo-Olu described the rail line as the “people’s project” and said “everyone will enjoy its world-class services”.

“The Blue Line Rail is one of the rail projects designed to make Lagos a fully interconnected city and it will transform our city’s transport system.”

He said there are over 300 CCTV cameras across the entire rail with over 30 cameras monitoring the tracks alone, with command and control centres available in all stations along the track.

“Lagos, this is your project. Take ownership and treat it with decency as you would treat anything that belongs to you. Any altercation or disturbance on the train will NOT be tolerated. It goes without saying that vandalism also will NOT be tolerated,” he said.

The Lagos governor reiterated his administration’s committment to “transforming every area” of the state.

Also speaking during a press conference at the Marina Station of the Blue Line Rail in Lagos, the Managing Director of the Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA), Engr. Abimbola Akinajo,  urged passengers against eating and drinking on the train, and said appropriate security had been put in place to protect lives and property.

She also assured that the governor’s plan to establish subsidized public transportation prices at a 50 per cent discount within the state would be extended to the train service as well.

Former President Muhammadu Buhari launched the first phase of the blue line rail project in Lagos in January.

Sanwo-Olu conducted a test run of the project, which is intended to run from Mile 2 (on the mainland) to Marina (on the island), before its inauguration.
