The Kogi State Government has expressed deep sorrow following a tragic boat mishap in Kupa Ebbe Village on Thursday, November 28, 2024. The accident, which occurred during a voyage from Kupa Ebe to Katcha Market, has resulted in significant casualties.
According to reports, the boat capsized near Kpata Danbo, with rescue efforts still underway. Authorities have confirmed the rescue of 24 individuals, who are now receiving medical care in nearby health facilities. Unfortunately, many more are feared dead.
In a press release, the State Government extended condolences to the bereaved families.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with you during this difficult time. We remain committed to supporting rescue efforts and are working in close collaboration with State and Federal agencies to minimise the loss of life,” the statement read.
Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo has directed the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) to provide immediate relief to affected families and tasked the Ministry of Health with ensuring survivors receive adequate medical attention.
The Kogi State Government also praised the swift response from the National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA), River Marshals, and officials from Katcha Local Government Area in Niger State, who have joined forces with Kogi and Federal authorities in rescue operations.
In response to the tragedy, the State Government has called for stricter safety measures in water transportation.
Operators have been urged to avoid night-time voyages and adhere to safety protocols.
“The Government is committed to implementing legal and administrative frameworks to safeguard the lives of both operators and passengers using water transportation,” the statement added.
The Honourable Commissioner for Information and Communications, Kingsley Femi Fanwo, appealed for intensified rescue efforts.
“We appeal to the Marine Marshals and all other agencies involved in rescue operations to save more lives,” he said.
The Kogi State Government in its statement said prayers for the souls of the departed and strength for their grieving families.
