Kogi State Government Pledges Full Investigation into Kotonkarfe Jailbreak

Kogi State government has vowed to unravel the circumstances behind Kotonkarfe jailbreak, warning against internal compromise, and assuring citizens of security.

The Kogi State Government has vowed to work closely with security agencies to unravel the circumstances behind the jailbreak at the Federal Correctional Centre, Kotonkarfe, where 12 inmates escaped, with one already rearrested.

In a statement issued on Monday, the Commissioner for Information and Communications, Hon. Kingsley Femi Fanwo, described the jailbreak theory as unacceptable, citing clear evidence of internal compromise and collaboration.

The statement read, “The jailbreak theory is unacceptable to the Kogi State Government as there are clear evidences of internal compromise and collaboration, leading to the unfortunate breach.

“As a government, we have consistently supported federal security agencies in their efforts to maintain law and order across the state. This includes providing logistics and other essential resources to enhance their operational effectiveness. Our support extends to all Correctional Centres within the state, reinforcing our commitment to a secure and well-managed correctional system.

“The circumstances surrounding the escape, including reports suggesting that the inmates fled through the tower without causing structural damage to the facility, raise serious concerns that necessitate a thorough investigation. It is imperative to establish the full facts, apprehend all escaped inmates, prevent future occurrences, and identify any internal or external collaborators who may have facilitated this breach.”

Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo has directed the State Security Adviser to work with the Federal Correctional Centre and relevant security agencies to prevent future incidents. The government reiterated its commitment to maintaining security across the state, noting its longstanding support for federal security agencies, including correctional facilities.

The statement also confirmed that one rearrested inmate is currently providing valuable information to security agencies. The government has pledged to monitor the investigation closely and ensure all responsible parties—whether inmates or accomplices—are brought to justice.

Commending the swift response of the security agencies, the Kogi State Government urged citizens to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities. “Any individual or community found harbouring escaped inmates will be held accountable,” the government warned.

Reassuring residents, the statement affirmed that there is no cause for panic. “The government, in collaboration with security agencies, is fully in control of the situation. We encourage everyone to continue their daily activities peacefully, knowing that decisive action is being taken to safeguard lives and property,” Fanwo concluded.
