Katsina Schoolboys’ Abduction: Kano Latest State to Order Closure of Schools

The Kano State government in northwestern Nigeria has ordered the closure of all schools —including private and public schools.

The order was contained in a statement issued by Sanusi Kiru, the state commissioner for health.

“Parents whose children are in boarding schools are to also arrange and convey their children/ wards back home from Wednesday, 16th December 2020,” Kiru said on Tuesday evening.

“All inconveniences are regretted.”

The state government did not give any reason for the shutdown but there are reports that its not unconnected to the insecurity in many parts of the north, with both Zamfara and Jigawa also ordering the closure of schools.

Over the weekend, more than 300 schoolboys were abducted by gunmen in Kankara, Katsina State.

There have been more than 74,000 Covid-19 cases in Nigeria and Kano has recorded 1,913 cases of the disease so far.
