As part of the effort to boost dry season farming and increase food production, the Kano State Government has created additional 500 hecters of farmlands ready for this year dry farming season.
The initiative was aimed at boosting agricultural production and create more jobs, empower farmers to take control of their livelihoods and improve their economic well-being.
Kano state Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, has given the approval to clear farmlands in Bagwai local government area, for the agricultural activities in the vicinity of Kafin Chiri dam.
According to the governor, dry season farming can create employment opportunities for rural communities, both directly and indirectly, through farming, processing, and marketing activities.
The Project Coordinator, Malam Ibrahim Garba Muhammad, said the initiative was in conjunction with the Kano State Agro-postoral development project (KSADP) , and the Islamic Development Bank (IDB).
He said, N1.5 billion was set aside for the extension of the five hundred farmlands at the Watari water irrigation project, while N3. 14 billion was expended for the repairs and distilling of the entire dam.
Speaking with Journalists on Sunday, the Watari project coordinator, Muhammad Adamu, said if the project is completed, over twenty five Thausands farmers would benefit from the program.
The farmers leader in the area Alhaji Ali Bello explained that the provision of access roads and water to the farmlands, many farmers can be empowered to take control of their livelihoods and improve their economic well-being.
