The Kano State Public Complaint and Anti-Corruption Commission (PCACC), has said it has concluded plans to clamp down on warehouses and stores engaged in hoarding of foodstuff across the state.
Bar. Muhuyi Rimingado, Chairman of the Commission, disclosed this while addressing newsmen on Thursday in Kano.
He said the Commission has set up an intelligence mechanism and launched a manhunt on food hoarders who Imposed untold hardship on the citizens.
“I believe there is a problem of inflation which is one of the genesis of hardship but hoarding also contributed. And we will not allow it.”
“To even hoard and take advantage of the people is undue influence and that is part of corruption. We are overwhelmed, this is the most essential part of our job,” he said.
“The Kano State government is worried over the situation. The situation is unbearable, people are hungry. A hungry man is an angry man.
“We are appealing to the traders that if they know they hoard foodstuffs to take advantage of the situation, they should bring it out to the market because we will not allow it.
“And if we find essential commodities that were hoarded, we have three options. One of the options is to lock down the store, seize the property, and take the matter to court. And the court in its wisdom will tell us what to do with the property. And that is a setback to the owner because we have confiscated the property and it can get spoilt,” Bar. Rimingado however stated.
Rimin Gado urged the residents with useful information to liaise with the Commission to” identify the warehouses or stores where hoarding is taking place. The commission will be glad with such genuine information and will protect the identity of such a person.”
According to him, “With the advent of Ramadan, we are not going to fold our arms as we are going to swing into action. We are not going to watch people take advantage of the situation by engaging in hoarding and compounding the situation.
It could be recalled the Kano state Governor, Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf lamented that many people are living in misery, starvation, and acute hunger in the state, which resulted in the death of many residents.
During an emergency meeting with the business community in Kano, Gov Yusuf decried the current hardship and starvation faced by the residents.
“There is hunger in Kano and we must find a solution to stop people from dying and falling sick. We know you are doing your best as a businessman but, you are not doing enough”. The Governor stated.
