In a swift and decisive move, Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf of Kano State has ordered the immediate arrest of the recently deposed Emir of Kano, Aminu Ado Bayero, for allegedly creating unrest in the state.
The announcement came early Saturday morning, following Bayero’s entry into Kano city, purportedly to reclaim the palace just two days after his deposition.
The statement, issued by the Governor’s spokesperson, Sanusi Bature Dawakin Tofa, confirmed that the new Emir, Sanusi Lamido Sanusi, had arrived at the palace at approximately 1:00 a.m. on Saturday, accompanied by the Governor, Deputy Governor, Speaker of the State Assembly, and other high-ranking government officials.
“As the Chief Security Officer of the state, His Excellency, the Executive Governor of Kano State, Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf, has directed the Commissioner of Police to arrest the deposed Emir with immediate effect for disturbing public peace and attempting to destroy the relative peace the state enjoys,” Tofa stated.
The former Emir’s attempt to forcefully return to the palace reportedly occurred under the cover of night, adding to the tensions already present in the state following his removal from power.
Governor Yusuf’s firm stance on the matter underscores his commitment to maintaining order and stability within Kano.
This unfolding situation follows the contentious decision to replace Bayero with the recent appointment of Emir Muhammadu Sanusi II as the new Emir of Kano State, a move that has stirred significant political and public interest.
