Japan PM Kishida Sends Condolences to Nigeria Over Flood Disaster

Fumio Kishida, Japanese Prime Minister has offered his condolence to President Muhammadu Buhari after severe floods affected millions and claimed many lives in the country.

The Japanese Prime Minister In a message issued on Wednesday, expressed deep sadness over ”the recent floods caused by heavy rainfall in many states in the Federal Republic of Nigeria which have claimed many precious lives and forced many people to evacuate.”

”On behalf of the Government and the people of Japan, I would like to express my heartfelt condolences to those who lost their lives and their bereaved families”, He said.

According to him, his sympathies are with those who are affected and he sincerely prays for the prompt reconstruction of the affected areas.

The recent flood happening is the worst Nigeria has experienced in over a decade, according to the country’s humanitarian affairs department.

The widespread flooding was prompted by extreme rainfall and the release of water from the Lagdo Dam in Cameroon, which neighbors Nigeria. The government said the unusually heavy rain and Climate Change are to blame.

More than 603 people have died, more than 1.3 million have been displaced, Thousands of homes and large swaths of farmland, roads and other critical infrastructure have been damaged or destroyed.

Floodwaters have inundated numerous communities along the banks of the Niger and Benue rivers, as well as Lokoja, the capital city of the state of Kogi, according to satellite imagery shared by NASA. Other states affected by the disaster includes; Bayelsa, Niger, Delta, Adamawa, Gombe, Jigawa, Parts of Kaduna, Nasarawa.

Nigeria’s Meteorological Agency has warned that the flooding could continue until the end of November.
