Japan Orders Toyota to Make ‘Drastic Reforms’ Amid New Certification Violations

The Japanese government has issued a corrective order to Toyota Motor, demanding “drastic reforms” after uncovering widespread, intentional misconduct and irregularities in the automaker’s vehicle certification procedures.

“We have instructed Toyota to make drastic reforms to ensure appropriate certification operations,” said a transport ministry official.

Toyota acknowledged the order, stating, “We are in the process of confirming compliance with requirements for the models involved, and customers do not need to stop using affected vehicles.”

The latest violations involve seven additional models, including the RAV4 and Lexus LM, which were not previously disclosed. Toyota had earlier claimed to have found no new cases of wrongdoing beyond those reported in June.

The transport ministry’s investigation was prompted by a safety test scandal at Toyota’s Daihatsu unit, leading to industry-wide checks of certification practices.

The ministry has alerted overseas authorities about the issues, as six of the affected models were also certified in other countries.
