“Totò was a great player, a symbol of tenacious desire and redemption,” said Italian soccer federation president Gabriele Gravina.

“His soccer was full of passion. And that fearless spirit made everyone appreciate him and will make him immortal.”

His goal celebrations, marked by jubilant leaps and energetic fist pumps,became iconic images of the tournament.

“Thank you for the emotions you gave us, for making us dream, cheer, hug and wave our Tricolore,” Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni wrote on social media.

Following his World Cup heroics, Schillaci enjoyed a successful club career, playing for teams such as Juventus, Inter Milan, and Jubilo Iwata in Japan.

His legacy would live on, not only as a footballing legend but also as a symbol of Italian pride and resilience.

As a tribute to Schillaci, a public viewing will be held at Palermo’s Renzo Barbera stadium before his funeral.
