Russian President Vladimir Putin has reacted to criticism from his US counterpart Joe Biden by saying, “it takes one to know one”.
Biden was asked in an interview this week whether he thought Putin was a killer and replied “I do.”
On state TV, Putin said Biden’s remarks reflect the United States’ own troubled past and current problems. He pointed at America’s past history with Native Americans and slavery, arguing that its painful legacy weighed on the US.
“I remember in my childhood, when we argued in the courtyard, we used to say: it takes one to know one,” he told state TV. “We always see our own traits in other people…” he said.
In a highly unusual move following Biden’s interview, Russia said it was recalling its ambassador to the US for urgent consultations over the future of US-Russia ties.
