Nigeria’s Senate Chief Whip, Orji Uzor Kalu, has declared his intention to run for President of the Senate in the 10th National Assembly.
Making referrals to his background and history, he stated that he has roots in different parts of the country, both from his schooling and his businesses. He also said that he is the most ranking senator from the South East, and so, he rightly deserves the position of Senate President.
While speaking to journalists, the former Abia governor said, “It is my turn to become the Senate President. If I’m elected Senate President, I will be team Nigeria. I’m going to work in every corner of Nigeria… Remember, I’m the only former governor who has never changed phone lines for more than 20 years. I’m still willing to maintain that telephone number to answer all my calls. I’m not going to switch off my phones because I’m Senate President. I’m hoping that Nigerians will pray for me to become Senate President because it’s my turn.”
In January 2022, the senator was one of those who vied for the All Progressive Congress’ (APC) presidential ticket, claiming he was the most qualified to be the next president of Nigeria. He however lost the ticket to Bola Ahmed Tinubu, who went on to become the President-Elect of Nigeria.
The quote “It is my turn” was made popular by Bola Ahmed Tinubu, at the start of his campaign for presidency, where he said, “emi lo kan”, which translates into the aforementioned quote.
