Israel-Hamas War: Biden Optimistic About Ceasefire Amid Ongoing Negotiation

U.S. President Joe Biden has voiced his optimism for a ceasefire in the Israel-Gaza conflict, aiming for progress, by the upcoming Monday.

It has been reported that the ongoing negotiations between Israel and Hamas representatives in Qatar have seen some advancement.

Speaking in New York City, President Biden stated, “My national security advisor tells me that we’re close,” emphasizing the potential for a resolution.

The conflict escalated when Israel launched a significant air and ground campaign in response to Hamas gunmen’s attack, resulting in casualties and hostages.

The Hamas-run health ministry in Gaza reports a substantial toll of 29,782 deaths in the territory since the conflict’s onset.

President Biden, acknowledging the close ties between the U.S. and Israel, expressed his hope for a ceasefire next Monday, noting ongoing efforts.

The U.S. State Department confirmed “progress” in negotiations for the release of Israeli hostages, facilitated by conversations involving Egypt, Israel, the United States, and Qatar.

However, uncertainties remain regarding Hamas’s acceptance of the proposed deal.

Last week, the U.S. faced criticism for vetoing a UN Security Council resolution urging an immediate Gaza ceasefire. Instead, the U.S proposed its own resolution, cautioning Israel against invading the southern Gazan city of Rafah.

Meanwhile, Israel’s government, under international pressure, received military plans for evacuating civilians from parts of Gaza before potential new ground operations.
