Israel facilitated the departure of a former soldier from Brazil after legal action was initiated against him by a foundation accusing Israeli forces of war crimes in Gaza.
The Hind Rajab Foundation, named after a Palestinian girl killed in the conflict, filed a complaint in Brazil based on video footage, geolocation data, and photos allegedly linking the soldier to demolitions of civilian homes.
Brazilian authorities reportedly launched an investigation following the complaint, with the case marking a significant step toward international accountability for alleged crimes committed during the Gaza conflict, according to the foundation.
Israel’s Foreign Ministry confirmed on Sunday that it assisted the soldier in leaving Brazil via a commercial flight, denouncing the investigation as an effort by “anti-Israel elements.” The ministry also cautioned Israeli soldiers against sharing details of their military service on social media.
The case comes amid broader scrutiny of Israel’s military actions in Gaza. Israel has faced international criticism, with the International Criminal Court issuing arrest warrants for Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and a former defence minister over alleged war crimes. Meanwhile, the International Court of Justice is investigating genocide allegations.
Israeli authorities have rejected such claims, insisting their military operations in Gaza comply with international law and accusing Hamas of endangering civilians by embedding its operations within residential areas.
However, videos shared by Israeli soldiers on social media, showing the destruction of homes and other contentious activities, have added fuel to the allegations.
The ongoing war began after Hamas militants attacked southern Israel on October 7, 2023, killing approximately 1,200 people and abducting 250. In response, Israel’s military offensive in Gaza has resulted in over 45,800 deaths, according to local health officials, who claim women and children account for more than half the casualties. Israel asserts it has killed over 17,000 militants, though evidence supporting this figure has not been provided.
The violence has caused widespread destruction in Gaza, displacing nearly 90% of its 2.3 million residents. As hostilities continue, investigations such as the Brazil case could lead to further legal and diplomatic challenges for Israel and its military personnel abroad.
