Inter Milan have secured the Italian league title in stunning fashion after a tense 2-1 triumph over city rivals, AC Milan on Monday.
Goals from Francesco Acerbi and Marcus Thuram ensured Inter Milan’s victory in the fiercely contested match, despite a late consolation strike from AC Milan’s Fikayo Tomori.
The match, marred by heated exchanges and late drama, saw three red cards brandished in stoppage time. AC Milan ended the game with nine men after Theo Hernandez and Davide Calabria were sent off alongside Inter Milan’s Denzel Dumfries.
Inter Milan’s dominance throughout the season was evident as they hold a commanding 17-point lead over second-placed Milan, having suffered just one defeat in the league campaign.
Following the historic win, Inter Milan’s captain Lautaro Martinez reflected on the significance of the moment, stating, “We find ourselves in a situation that’s never happened before. We needed to take advantage of this opportunity because, look around, the entire stadium is ours now.”
Even amidst pouring rain, the jubilant atmosphere at the San Siro remained palpable as Inter’s fans revelled in the club’s triumph, displaying symbols of their impending title and sending a clear message to their rivals.
For manager Simone Inzaghi, this marks his first Serie A title in his managerial career and a sixth trophy with Inter. Inzaghi expressed gratitude to the players, directors, and chairman Steven Zhang for their contributions to the team’s success.
