Dele Olojede

Celebrated journalist Dele Olojede says Nigeria President Muhammadu Buhari has been AWOL (Away Without Official Leave) amidst the serious crisis of violence and insecurity plaguing the country.

Mr Olojede, a Nigerian journalist and winner of the Pulitzer Prize for his work covering the aftermath of the Rwandan genocide stated this on Friday while he discussed President Buhari’s performance so far on an ARISE News programme.

According to him, Nigerians are not being led or governed and questioned President Buhari’s reasons for running for the office of the President of Nigeria four times.

“Our president is AWOL. The country is in a serious crisis of confidence, of violence, of dysfunction and our president is just not there,” Olojede told ARISE News.

“I have to be honest, I have many many friends in that administration, as well as governors, the frank truth is that we are not being led, we are not being governed, and it leaves one to question why Buhari wanted this job so much, why he ran four times for president before he finally made it, and then he made it and just went into aso villa and just close the door behind him.

“Getting the job is not the ambition, doing with the power is the ambition and I don’t think that most rational people will argue that Buhari’s presidency has been a roaring success for our country.”

He is of the opinion that the abduction of citizens in Nigeria has become almost on a weekly basis, which is as a result of the suffering mostly in the northern part of the country.

Mr Olojede says the root cause of the abductions and sufferings being experienced in the country is the lack of governance.

“Just only a few years ago when the Chibok girls were abducted, it was such a shocking thing, we’ve never experienced that before in our country, the whole world was in an uproar and now it’s become almost every week, larger number of school children are abducted throughout our country, mostly in the north.

“The suffering, especially in the north today, is unbearable for human beings and sooner or later the whole country is going to be engulfed in it. At the root cause of all of these is that we are not governed.

“Our government does not have control over its territory, our leaders have gone AWOL, non-state actors have moved into the void and they are up to all kinds of mischief.

“The consequences of this state of affairs are too frightening to contemplate and as you see this deterioration almost as it happened in Rwanda and you get to a point where everything just collapses,” he said.
