Insecurity: Afenifere Restates Call for Multilevel Policing

It pointed out reports from various parts of the country indicating an upsurge in acts of banditry, especially kidnapping.

A frontline socio-political organisation, the Afenifere Renewal Group, has restated its call for the establishment of state and local government police in order to tame the degenerating security situation in the country.

National Publicity Secretary of the group, Jare Ajayi, in a statement called on the federal government and security agencies in Nigeria to take more decisive actions to arrest the fast-degenerating security situation in the country.

He pointed out that reports from various parts of the country indicated an upsurge in acts of banditry, especially kidnapping.

It noted that since the terrorists were targeting farmers, road users, students, youth corpers, among others, drones should be deployed in various parts of the country while quick dispensation of justice for kidnappers and bandits must be accelerated.

It, therefore, called for “Immediate establishment of state and local government areas’ Police Forces, boosting the morale of security officials in terms of remuneration, provision of modern equipment, proper kitting and technological innovations.

“To put an end to the risks faced by youths, especially youth corpers, these youths be allowed to serve their fatherland within their localities – within their states of origin or within the state of domicile.”

Afenifere stressed that this was to put an end to the corpers being kidnapped in the process of making a long-distance journey as happened to the corpers going to Sokoto from Akwa Ibom State.

It lamented that Ondo, Osun, Ekiti, Imo, Rivers, Niger, Nassarawa, Kaduna, Benue, Imo, Enugu and Katsina were among the hot spots for banditry and  kidnapping.
